Passivhaus Women’s Refuge

New Passivhaus Women’s Refuge, creating a secure and healthy environment for women and children escaping from domestic abuse

Our Role: Passivhaus Consultant, RIBA Stages 3-4 appointed by the client

Delta Q was engaged by the client’s agent to assess whether the existing building design could be adapted to meet Passivhaus standards. Through close collaboration with the design team, we refined the design, developing an efficient fabric and services solution that aligns with Passivhaus principles.

The building presents unique challenges due to its high occupancy density, similar to that of hotels or student accommodations. Achieving optimal energy efficiency and a comfortable internal environment requires careful attention to ventilation design, with a focus on cascade ventilation where feasible. Minimising heat losses in the domestic hot water system is also key to meeting Passivhaus requirements.

The project was tendered in Autumn 2024.
